Oral Presentation: The Impact of Light Exposure on Sleep: A Pilot Study

This is part of the monthly MassAITC webinar series. Abstract: Light exposure is the primary regulator of human circadian rhythms, influencing many aspects of our physiology and behavior, including sleep, alertness, and mood, as well as many neuroendocrine and cognitive functions. While we have evolved experiencing “bright days and dark nights,” most of us now experience significantly darker days and brighter nights than our pre-modern ancestors, likely resulting in widespread circadian disruption. And as we age, the relationship between light exposure, circadian rhythms, and sleep can be further compromised both through normal aging (e.g., less light reaching the retina due to clouding of the lens) and age-related risk factors, such as Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), which is known to damage the brain’s master clock. Title: Automated Physical Performance Battery as a Digital Marker for Alzheimer's Disease and Mild Cognitive ImpairmentPresenter: Ehsan Adeli (PI) Abstract: Historically, screening for incidence of AD-related MCI or conversion from MCI to AD dementia has relied on cognitive, activities of daily living, and brain imaging measures. Limitations of this diagnostic approach include dependency on education and language, time-consuming and costly measures, and long-term monitoring. Emerging studies suggest that non-tremor motor dysfunction in dementias is known to be highly associated with AD biomarkers, with signs of cognitive decline visible in gait and hand movement at various stages of the illness. Oral Presentation: Precision Phenotyping of Mild Behavioral Impairment and the Early Detection of Dementia

Abstract: There is growing recognition of the importance of changes in behavior as an early clinical marker of the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Behavior symptoms may precede the onset of cognitive symptoms by as many as three years. However, these symptoms are often confused for primary psychiatric pathology and there is an urgent need for markers that can help quantify behaviors with the eventual goal of helping distinguish behavior changes related to psychiatric pathology from behavior changes related to the onset of dementia. This talk will summarize the state of knowledge on mild behavioral impairment, and present data from three studies demonstrating how a range of sensor-derived biomarkers can quantify subtle changes in behavior with precision.
